Saturday August 17th - KO 2:30pm - View Photos

Pre-Match Report

Titans Head Coach Lee Blackett goes into his second pre-season game against Hull Ionians unable to select from a full squad due to injuries. Ed Williamson, Josh Brown and Dallan Murphy are all carrying slight knocks from the midweek match at Worcester and won’t be risked tomorrow.

However Blackett has selected a strong side to take on Ionians and explained that the player’s attitude will be a key factor which he will monitor closely, “After a solid start against Worcester we are looking to improve and we are looking to give some more of the boy’s a bit more game time. We’ll get the opportunity to see how Alfie To’oala goes on at loosehead and Toby Williams at tighthead; we’ll also get another look at Niall Shannon at hooker.

“We’ll also get to see a few more of our backs in action, but more importantly it’s about trying to improve on our performance against Worcester and it will be all about out attitude.

“Getting “up” for Worcester is very easy and then 3 days later we’ve got to get back up to that level to face Hull, I expect to learn a lot more about the players on Saturday.”

Titans: 15 Ben Rath (Trialist), 14 Jamie Broadley, 13 Lloyd Hayes, 12 Jack Roberts, 11 Curtis Wilson, 10 Garry Law, 9 Dan White, 1 Alfie To’oala, 2 Niall Shannon, 3 Toby Williams, 4 Toby Freeman, 5 Barney Maddison, 6 Max Argyle, 7 Jack Preece, 8 Laurence Pearce.

Replacements: TBC

Match Report

A rampant Rotherham Titans displayed their ruthless side as they rained in 13 unanswered tries against National League One side Hull Ionians at Brantingham Park. The home side showed great spirit and tenacity throughout and their work rate perhaps warranted some points on the board.

However, the Titans attitude was first rate and their determination to keep the host’s try less prevailed; whilst at the other end the Titans haul came courtesy of Jamie Broadley (2T), Jack Roberts (2T), Toby Freeman (T), Laurence Pearce (2T), Barney Maddison (T), Jack Preece (T), Max Argyle (T), Ali Birch (T), Ben Rath (2T, 4C) and Juan Pablo Socino (1C).

Titans Head Coach Lee Blackett was not surprisingly quite satisfied with his side’s efforts, “It’s always hard to back up a decent performance just 3 or 4 days later and a key component in achieving that is attitude. You can best gauge the attitude of the group when you have to defend and we set ourselves a target of conceding no tries and that’s what we did, so yes I am pleased with our display.

“Could we have been better? Yes of course we could, but we’ve got a lot of sore boys out there who have just played 2 games in 3 days having not played any in the last 3 months.

“I thought Jack Roberts really stood out in the backline; I thought Dan White also had another good game and is have a really good pre-season and I think Laurence Pearce showed glimpses of what we know he can do. I think I also have to mention Max Argyle; we’ve been talking about Max a lot behind the scenes and although we know he’s one for the future, he’s shown today he’s a worthy member of this Titans squad.

“Other than picking up another couple of niggles I am quite happy at where we are at this stage in our preparations and we’ll move on now to Macclesfield and Loughborough.”
