Titans add Scott Freer to their squad
Rotherham Titans are pleased to announce the addition of hooker Scott Freer to their squad ahead of the 2014/15 Greene King IPA Championship campaign.
The 26 years-old will link-up again with Lee Blackett, having played and trained with the Titans head coach during their time together at Leeds Carnegie. Freer, born in Leeds spent 6 years with his home-town club and has a wealth of experience having competed in the Championship, Aviva Premiership and LV=Cup.
Scott has represented Yorkshire as well as claiming honours for England at U18 and U19 level. He has also played on loan with Otley, Nottingham and Wharfedale.
Commenting on Titans latest squad addition, Lee Blackett explained, “I’ve known Scott since he was an 18 years-old coming through the Leeds Academy. I’ve seen him develop and there’s no doubt he’s a Premiership quality player. Unfortunately the thing which has held him back is he’s had some problems with injuries. However, when Scott is fully fit and firing there’s absolutely no doubt that he’s a Premiership rugby player. I know Leeds regarded him very highly and although he had last year out through injury we’ve taken a chance on him.
“Scott was a former prop and he has massive strengths in the tight and at the set piece. He’s a ball of muscle and a tough man. He’s a very direct ball-carrier, he’s physical and when he tackles he puts his body on the line and that’s why players like Scott sometimes pick up injuries because he’s very physical and direct.
“It’s going to be a great fight between Scott, Tom Cruse and Johnny Matthews next season. Tom was voted as the best hooker in the Championship last year and Johnny claimed the same accolade in National Two. So we know we’ve got great competition for the number 2 jersey and as a coach that’s what you want in every position.”
