Colts suffer narrow loss in Plate final
Well what a terrible day (weather wise that is). In front of a large Rotherham crowd (2 buses went to Hull). In terrible conditions Rotherham Colts took on Middlesbrough in the Yorkshire Plate final at Hull Ionians (as Huddersfield was under water).
Rotherham started the game playing into the driving rain and up the slope at Ionians. The Colts managed to get on the front foot (despite the conditions) with forwards and backs carrying the ball well. But every time they got in the Middlesbrough half the ball was lost and Middlesbrough were allowed to clear their lines.
Despite this they persevered and were rewarded when Alex Jones scored a fine individual try from just inside their opponent’s half .The conversion was missed. This stirred Middlesbrough into action and they put the Colts under severe pressure. The Colts defended very well but conceded 2 unconverted tries to make the half time score 10 - 5 in Middlesbrough's favour.
Rotherham started the second half well and put Middlesbrough under the cosh, but they defended very well and it took Rotherham 20 minutes to get the score level. This was done with the forwards driving for the line and Adam Wallbank was barged over from short range. The conversion was missed so the score was 10-10.
Rotherham tried their best to get the winning score, but Middlesbrough held firm and the game looked to be heading for a draw and the Plate shared. But on a rare visit into the Rotherham half Middlesbrough were awarded a penalty for offside at the breakdown. The fullback stepped up and kicked the penalty. With only 2 minutes remaining, Rotherham could not get their hands on the ball and Middleborough ran the clock down to win the match.
