Phoenix back to winning ways

Rotherham Phoenix returned to winning ways as they defeated Burley 12-3 in their Yorkshire 3 clash at Clifton Lane. The victory sent Phoenix up to 6th in the table, just 6 points adrift of top spot.

Rotherham welcomed back Jack Pearson after a long injury layoff, however, veteran second rower James Mallender was missing through injury and they had to use winger John Saddington at scrum half due to injuries to Nathan Bird and Sam Parker.

Rotherham dominated the first half with their backs making numerous inroads into the Burley twenty two. Standing in out in particular was centres Joe Jarvis and Matt Allott, whose strong running and intelligent lines caused the visitors all sorts of problems.

The Rotherham pack was its usual dominant force, however they were repeatedly penalised at the set piece, causing bewilderment amongst the Phoenix players. Despite Rotherham’s dominance all over the park, it was Burley who got the scoreboard ticking over first from a penalty, sending the visitors 3-0 ahead.

Phoenix response was almost immediate and following a period of sustained pressure from the pack, Tom Coy was on hand to dib down for an unconverted try. Phoenix continued to press and put the visitors under immense pressure; credit to Burley though as they tackled manfully to keep the home side at bay.

However, just before half time Jenkinson sent a neat pass to centre Jarvis who cut through a gap in the Burley defence to add Phoenix’s 2nd try of the afternoon. Jenkinson converted to extend the host’s lead to 12-3.

In the second half the game turned into a very scrappy affair as Rotherham kicked into a strong wind. Phoenix did however create a number of try-scoring opportunities, but all too often came up short.

This week Rotherham Phoenix travel to York in search of a first away win against York RI.
