Titans add to their squad: Joe Ellyatt_1

Titans add to their squad

Rotherham Titans have added to their squad ahead of their RFU Championship fixture against Bristol Rugby at the weekend.

Titans have brought in back-rower Joe Ellyatt, following a series of injury concerns within their squad, primarily with Latu Makaafi, who broke his collarbone against Jersey a fortnight ago.

Joe Ellyatt is no stranger to Clifton Lane as he was a Trialist during pre-season with the Titans. Jersey-born Ellyatt can play anywhere in the back row and at 6’ 3” and 16 stones, he’s sure to add further physicality to the Rotherham pack.

Ellyatt was previously part of the Bath Academy system and was the youngest player to represent Jersey Rugby Club, when they competed in London 1. He also played with Club Hampshire for five years and represented Bath in the Middlesex 7’s at Twickenham in 2009.

Titans Head Coach Andre Bester commented on Ellyatt’s return, “Joe impressed us pre-season; I think in his pre-season stats he was one of the quickest guys around. He did impress in pre-season, however, we chose not to go with him at that stage and he was a bit unlucky. But we also knew that the first time we picked up any injuries in that department we would go back to him.

“Joe can play anywhere in the back row and when I look at Joe Ellyatt I see a lot of Sean Dougall about him; only he’s a big bigger than Sean. If he can school himself and worked very hard at his game, he can become an outstanding player.

“What Joe needs to do, is when his opportunity arises, he needs to grasp it with both hands and make it impossible for me to leave him out of the squad.”
