Rotherham Rugby Club Statement

Rotherham Rugby Club can now officially announce that on Wednesday evening Andre Bester tended his resignation as Head Coach of Rotherham Titans with immediate effect.

Rob Hannon CEO of Rotherham Rugby Club said, “We have been in a process with Andre which was to be completed today. Andre has chosen to resign before that process could be completed. Rotherham Titans has acted honestly, decently and with integrity at all times in the best interests of the Club, its staff and supporters.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Andre for his efforts on our behalf and wish him all the very best in the future"

Rotherham Rugby Club Chairman, Nick Cragg added, “Martin Jenkinson, Director of Rugby, has met with the squad.  Obviously, nobody is happy with the position we find ourselves in, at this stage of the season.  Nonetheless, the team has shown great spirit and are up for the important challenge on Saturday which sees us, not only play our local rivals Doncaster, but start our campaign in the Yorkshire Regiment Trophy.”

Continuing Nick said, “There has already been significant interest shown from potential replacements for the Head Coach, and we have drawn up a short-list of 6.  Of these, 4 are in position and cannot be named.  The other 2 are, Alex Codling and Peter Drewett, ex Exeter, both of whom are strong candidates.

“Until we make an appointment, Lee Blackett will be the Head Coach. I do hope all our fans rally around the Club in this difficult time and give Doncaster a true 'Rotherham welcome.”

The Chairman concluded by saying, “Since taking over the Club in 2004 we are generally happy with what has been achieved. We have kept our Club in the top echelon of English Rugby.

“We have re-engaged with many members of our Club who played in the pre-professional era and have a very vibrant Vice Presidents' organisation, who have done much to support us.

“We are now fielding two amateur sides, one of which is competing at Yorkshire 3 level.

“We have re-vitalised our junior- and mini-rugby programmes.

“We have been active in the community and are very proud with the work we do with our charity, The Titans Community Foundation.

“But we know there is still much to do not least of all maintaining Rotherham's position at the highest level, and making sure that we provide winning, attractive rugby, to delight our supporters”.
