Local organisation thank Titans supporters
Local volunteer organisation Friends of Clifton Park visited the club this week to pass on their thanks to Rotherham Titans supporters for their generosity at a recent bucket collection, for the War Memorial in Clifton Park.
The collection raised £377 which will go towards a fund set-up to add the names of the Rotherham soldiers killed in the Second World War.
Friends of Clifton Park are a volunteer organisation with around 80 members; their current chief aim is to raise £30,000 in order for the Rotherham soldiers killed during the Second World War to be recognised with a War Memorial at Clifton Park.
Friends of Clifton Park committee member Marilyn Moreman told the Titans, “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of the Rotherham Titans supporters that contributed to this most worthwhile cause. We know there are a lot of great causes out there, but we believe the fallen soldiers from Rotherham who lost their lives during the Second World War, deserve to be recognised in this way.
“The cenotaph in Clifton Park has only got the names of the fallen during the First World War and there are over 1400 armed forces personnel that were killed during the Second World War from the Rotherham area and they are not recognised at the memorial in Clifton Park at all.
We believe it is a tragedy that the family and friends of Rotherham’s fallen heroes during the Second World War have no memorial to visit to pay their respects and to remember their loved ones. It is so sad that the children and grandchildren of Rotherham’s fallen really have nowhere to go in Rotherham.
Our aim is to raise £30,000 pounds to have a granite wall built in Clifton Park, to the rear of the Peace Gardens. We have managed to raise £10,000 in the last 18 months or so and people have been very generous towards the cause. A man gave us quite a lot of money when we were at the memorial in Clifton Park and we couldn’t thank him enough, but he replied, “Rubbish, this is nothing compared to the sacrifices that were made for all of us today!”
Should anyone wish to contribute towards the fund, you can do so by sending a cheque made payable to: “Friends of Clifton Park Memorial Fund” and send to the address below.
