Titans bring in back rower
Rotherham Titans are pleased to announce the recruitment of back rower Sam Heygate from National League One side Loughborough Students.
Twenty-one years-old Heygate has completed his degree in Economics and now wants to fully focus on his rugby career. Northampton born, Heygate spent some time with his home-town’s club academy and has represented England at U16 level and England Counties at U20’s.
Titans Head Coach Lee Blackett is delighted to have brought in Heygate and explained he how the move came about, “I first came across Sam having had a conversation with Dave Morris who is the Head Coach down at Loughborough. I’ve known Dave for a number of years and I trust what he says about players and his opinion on players. Dave told me he thought Sam had the tools to compete in the Championship and that he was surprised no other Championship clubs had come in for him.
“On the back of that conversation we started to have a look at Sam and immediately we saw he was an athlete. He’s quick, very powerful and he’s got a great attitude; he’ll be a great addition to the squad and he’ll compete for the number 6 and 8 jerseys.
“I think the main attraction here for Sam is to be involved in a full time professional rugby environment. He knows he’s got the ability to play Championship rugby, as do we and hopefully Sam will show everyone at Clifton Lane why we have brought him here. He’s an intelligent guy and he’s desperate to come to Rotherham and succeed.”
